Hi Roel,

Well, Mint 19.1 and my new printer are not running quite as I would like, but I am ready to create a copy of my Calendar and give you access if that would help?

In the meantime is it safe to install 4.7.5 over 4.7.3 as I have missed out on 4.7.4?

Thanks for these fixes Roel.

Unfortunately, I'm still running 4.7.3 because I need to find a time slot to install Linux Mint 19.1, as 17.3 my current platform, is dropping out of support soon. I've also got a new printer to install that won't talk to 17.3 properly. Once those tasks are out of the way I will set up a duplicate copy of my calendar for you to play with to check out those other bugs discussed at: http://www.luxsoft.eu/lcforum/viewtopic.php?id=123

Hi Dan,

I now realise it was silly of me to think that MP might be an uncommon search term.

However, I think my main point holds true, that the computer naive might wonder why "amp;" should be added to the legitimate ampersand within "Coffee & Chat" and what made those four additional unwanted characters appear there anyway!

However, now I see that the problem is a whole lot bigger than I imagined and I am sympathetic to the view that it is not a priority to fix.

Hi Roel,

Once gain, thanks for the explanation though it might be worth pointing out the reason for the particular search I made that uncovered the bug.

MP is used extensively in our calendar as it is the abbreviation for Member of Parliament and our local MP has regular bookings at our premises. The computer naive would be at a loss to understand why they kept seeing a lot of "Coffee and Chat" responses in their search results and why &" appeared where "and" should be!

Given the work involved when considering multiple languages (which hadn't occurred to me would be part of the problem when I raised the issue), I fully understand your reluctance to see the issue as a priority.

Certainly for we Brits, there are few symbols we're likely to need translated and I'm not seeing a problem with e-acute in café in our calendar which is the only other unusual character my folk are likely to use.

Hi Roel,

Thanks for the full explanation. I hadn't considered the "wait 10 mins to treat as a fresh edit" possibility. I can see that would be very convenient for a large majority of users of LuxCal.

I think the "10 minute rule" also explains some of my confusion as in the first week of the running the diary I was entering a lot of events and it only emerged later who should be assigned as owner of them. In other cases although I knew who would be responsible at the start, I entered them myself to establish a "house style" for the way events should be recorded.

Roel wrote:

4. When you delete an event, the date and time are recorded, but not the user who deleted the event.

Number 4 could be called a 'bug', although it was done like this on purpose because we thought it was not worthwhile to add two special fields (name and date/time) just for a deleted event .

In my head I considered a "delete" to be an edit so, as the top of the email report explains whether it is for an add, change or delete, I expected that the username of the person who made the delete should appear in the existing Edit field (rather than require a special Delete field to be added to the report).

As you'll see I discovered that "Changes" display obtained from the Options menu, delivers the information in exactly the way I would have expected, accurately showing who deleted the entry (labelled as an Edit not a Delete) and does not show the completely false information that the webmaster interacted with the record of the event at the time given.

So I do consider #4 a bug in the email report.

Hi Roel,

Just uncovered another of those minor technical issues. I have a recurring event title "Coffee & Chat". This displays fine in the main calender displays and the "Edit Event" window.

However, I did a search for "mp" just now and the results screen included a lot of entries with

Coffee & Chat

in the results screen. I guess this might affect certain other characters as well.

Edited: 24/01/2019 @ 9:49 (Webmaster)

However, it was not "Webmaster" that made the deletion which is what the Edited line appears to be reporting. It was RonS

Here's what I saw on the email associated with the deletion sent at 9:49:

Deleted event:

Title:    MP's Surgery
Date / time:    13/07/2019 @ 9:30 - 12:00
Venue:    The School Room

Edited:    24/12/2018 @ 10:55 (RonS)
==================

In the email report the edited line appears to show the last time RonS worked on the item, but it does not tell me who made the deletion, and I need to know that in case it is someone different - and in this case all of the MP's future events had been deleted and I needed to know if that meant I needed to update the page on the web site that lists all users of the church.

Can you investigate the apparent bugs what is displayed on the Edit line in various places, and perhaps consider adding a "Deleted" line indicating who made a deletion, if that was the action taken.

If it helps I am running 4.7.3M

I have been aware for some time that email notifications do not appear to be reported accurately, or I do not understand what they are meant to report and I find the messages confusing, but I haven't been able to put my finger on it as my calendar has only recently been started, with over a dozen people authorised to post and because as administrator I have both:
# made many minor adjustment to the events others post and
# entered many posts on behalf of another user and then immediately assigning ownship to that person
In this way I hoped to ensure that all events had a common style to their Title and Description fields.

From the emails I could never be certain that my edits were recorded as my edits nor could I tell if an event had been properly re-assigned to the new owner.

Now I realise the problem is more fundamental The "Edited" line is not reliably reported or has multiple functions depending on the nature of the change - but it goes further than email notifications. As for the first time this morning I happened to chose to use the "Changes" display before I looked at my emails

Here's what I saw on the Changes display:

(Not sure why but the forum seems to be refusing to post my full message, so it will appear in parts)

Hi Roel,

Roel wrote:

Is there no way to install the new 4.7.4 calendar in a test folder, so that I can test without affecting the main calendar? Via email I can explain to you in a few lines how to do this; it's really easy - no Softaculous needed.
Let me know if you want me to do this.

Apologies for late reply. I've been tremendously busy with other projects.
Hopefully, I will have time next week to created a duplicate calendar to which I will be happy to give you access.
I'll let you know as soon as I have it ready.

[Edit]Duplicate because I wonder if some of the issues are related to the upgrade and files which may have been left from the previous installation. But if you think a second completely new installation would help I can do that with an empty calendar immediately.

I've done some investigation and found that in the v4.7.4M archive there is a file at:
pages/alert.php in which lines 51-56 contains:

<footer>
<span class='floatR'><a href='http://www.luxsoft.eu?V4.7.2L' target='_blank'>powered by <span class='footLB'>Lux</span><span class='footLR'>Soft</span></a></span>
<?
if (!empty($note)) { echo "<span class='note'>== {$note} ==</span>"; }
?>
</footer>

And it appears to be called three times from within index.php (and a lot of language files.)

Could this be the rogue file causing the problem?

Hi Roel,

I am having the same problem following my upgrade. My upgrade shows other curious symptoms.

In order to maintain calendar access I have used the Softaculous "Restore" facility and I am now back running 4.7.3M (as reported by the "Powered by LuxSoft" button) and all seems to be well again.

Let me know if you wish me to re-upgrade and grant you Admin access to the calendar in order to investigate went wrong.

Hi Roel,

My host has the Softaculous app installer available and I use it to install my copy LuxCal. I have just used it to upgrade from 4.7.3M to 4.7.4M. However, I now appear largely locked out of my calendar. See:
http://www.stalhambaptist.org.uk/diary.php

These are the symptoms.

While the calendar will launch (and display a link to 4.7.4M when I hover over the "Powered by Luxcal" button on the footer.) as soon as I attempt to access any facility, the screen clears and displays a message box

Session expired.
Please restart the calendar.".

The footer also contains a message

== no token assigned ==

I also note that when this happens the Powered by LuxSoft button now reveals a link to 4.7.2L

Hi Roel,

Roel wrote:

I also read with interest your Updater's Guide, very clear explanation, I could not find any error wink

Did you notice that the image on the final page displays another minor "bugette"!

When you open the initial "Edit Event" window for a series, the Title field background colour fills the whole line.

Whereas when you do not have edit rights and it is only the "Event" window that opens, the background colour only appears behind the text.

I think the Title field on both windows should appear as in the second "Event" window.

The site has a footer and because I haven't found a way of making the height of the iframe flexible so that the diary neatly fits the space allotted for it, and never has it's own scrollbar or an empty space below it, I was thinking about merging those static parts into the diary page.

I assumed the browser would load the static part from its cache, so there wouldn't be a big overhead.

However, learning how to make the iframe height vary with the content of diary would probably be preferable.

(I fear I'm drifting off topic!)

Thanks for your kind words about my diary. I'm sure my computer naive users will still find my Updater's Guide lacks some vital detail that seems obvious to us but doesn't occur to them. smile

My next big task is to remove the embedded iframe that I use for the calendar and try to incorporate my page header into your code! I'm putting that off to the new year!

I've inserted the patch you supplied and it seems to do the trick.

Have I found a bug?

In Settings under Views I have:

Weeks to show in Month view: 1
First day of the week: 1

It appears that with these settings there is not always the six weeks needed to be visible for all days to be displayed. Check December 2019 on my calendar at:
http://www.stalhambaptist.org.uk/diary.php
1 December is only visible if I select November as the month to view.

Hi Roel,

Now I feel guilty! I really should have checked the code before making the request. As I have never used such glyphs in my own work and it just never occurred to me that they were any thing but images supplied within LuxCal.

In spite of the problems they cause I support your decision to use them within LuxCal. I'll just have a re-think about what goes in my user notes which are mainly aimed at 70+ year olds with extremely limited computing skills, when acurate representations of what they might see on screen are important. Now I know you can't control that completely, I can work around it.

Hi Roel,

It's an area of the program I hadn't tested, so thanks for the clarification.

It seems my question prompted the discovery of a bug, so I guess I should be pleased about that! I'm all for killing bugs! smile

Hi Roel,
Thanks Roel. While your reply tells me about the approval system unfortunately it doesn't answer my question.

At what point are emails to be sent now released? On creation, so that colleagues of person creating an event know he has applied for the booking or on approval by a manager, so that all may see it?

Greg

As I try to write comprehensive guides for my users I have discovered that some screens can vary significantly on different devices. While some of this can be applauded as a way of making screens more usable on different sized devices, other differences me cause me problems.

For example, what image should I use to illustrate the "Select Date Button" on the Navigation Bar?

On my phone it shows "17" with a heading "July" on a blue background. On my tablet the same button appears as a month grid headed "May" on a green background. While on my Desktop it shows "21" (in a different format to my phone) with a heading "Mar" on a red background.

Similarly with the the "Previous" and "Next" buttons on the "View Bar" (as I call the one under the "Navigation Bar")

They show as dark arrowheads on both phone and desktop, while on my Tablet they show awkwardly slightly high on the bar as square buttons with a graduated blue tint containing white arrowheads.

Could the next release do away with such cosmetic differences in the standard product? (But by all means provide the differing images as resources which can be added to a user's own installation.)

If a Category of event needs approval, does that mean any emails announcing the event are held until approval is given?

You can remove the Extra Fields on the Add Event dialogue by clearing any text in the "Extra field 1: Label:" field under "Events" on the "Settings" screen.

You can remove the "Venue" field on the Add Event dialogue by deleting the digit "1" from all three fields under "Views" on the "Settings" page. These are:

Event templates: General view:     Upcoming view:     Hover box:

Have others this problem? Is it caused by the unusual capitalisation of the name used for the calendar address?
