Simple Text Search on top bar

Unless the person clicks on the menu to bring up a detailed search they don't know it exists. Most sites have a simple text search box or in CNN's case a magnifying glass that when clicked brings up the search box. Add the default search to the top bar or below top bar and above date with the detailed search still on the menu.

You could have just the magnifying glass like CNN's site that when clicked brings up the search just like in the menu.
